Project Details
This family house was planned on a site that already carried a strong working legacy — a functioning rice and poha mill that has been run by the owner for nearly 50 years.
The idea was to create a home that could respect this everyday business activity while giving the family a comfortable and private living space above it.
The design followed the simple and familiar concept of niche dukaan, upar makaan — work below and home above. The ground floor was planned as a working office and storage warehouse for the mill, allowing the business to continue functioning smoothly.
The first floor was dedicated to the family residence. To make the most of the available footprint, the house was designed to cantilever on all sides, increasing the usable area without disturbing the working spaces below.
Balconies were added to all rooms, giving each space an outdoor extension. These balconies offer relief from the local climate, especially during heavy rainfall, while also adding depth and character to the facade.
The residence also includes a full terrace footprint, as requested by the clients. This terrace was planned as an important part of their daily routine, offering open space for family use, gatherings and everyday activities.
The project brings together business, family life and climate-sensitive planning in one compact structure. It is a practical home shaped around continuity, comfort and the owner’s long-standing relationship with the site.
